Davis Ponjuán appointed as Conducting Fellow for 26-27 season

Mesquite Symphony Orchestra Welcomes Guest Conductor Davis Ponjuán

MESQUITE, Texas — The Mesquite Symphony Orchestra is pleased to welcome Davis Ponjuán as a guest conductor for an upcoming performance, bringing his passion for music education, conducting, and artistic excellence to the podium.

Now in his fifth year as Assistant Band Director at Burnett Junior High School and Harrison Intermediate School in Wylie ISD, Ponjuán has established a reputation for cultivating musical excellence. Under his leadership, his ensembles have consistently earned Sweepstakes ratings at the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest, the highest distinction awarded. In recognition of his innovative work in music education, he was named a 2025 recipient of a Wylie Education Foundation grant.

Beyond the classroom, Ponjuán is an active conductor, clinician, and performer throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth area. He is a sought-after masterclass clinician and solo contest judge and performs with the Premier Lone Star Wind Orchestra. As a founding member of the Renaissance Winds in Garland, he has also conducted chamber ensembles and served as a sectional clinician for the Lone Star Youth Winds, mentoring the next generation of musicians.

Ponjuán earned a Master of Music Education degree from Southern Methodist University and graduated summa cum laude from the University of North Texas with bachelor's degrees in both Music Education and Clarinet Performance. While at UNT, he received the 2020 Collegiate Music Educator Award in recognition of his outstanding leadership and commitment to music education.

When he is not teaching or conducting, Ponjuán enjoys performing traditional Irish music on the tin whistle, traveling, and spending time with his husband, Matt, and their cat, Cabbage.
