Mesquite Symphony Orchestra Appoints Francisco Maia as Assistant Conductor for 2025–2026 Season

Mesquite, TX — May 1, 2025 — The Mesquite Symphony Orchestra (MSO) proudly announces the appointment of Francisco R. Maia as Assistant Conductor for the 2025–2026 season. This promotion follows his impactful tenure as Conducting Fellow, during which he contributed significantly to the orchestra's artistic growth.

A native of Portugal, Francisco Maia brings a rich background in music education and performance. He earned a Licenciatura degree in Musicology from FCSH-Nova in Lisbon in 2016 and a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting from West Texas A&M University in 2021, where he studied under Mark Bartley and BJ Brooks. His collegiate highlights include conducting Gilbert & Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore during the 2020–2021 WTAMU Opera season.

Before relocating to the United States, Maia honed his conducting skills at the Atlantic Coast Conducting Academy in Portugal, studying under esteemed mentors such as Luis Clemente, Colin Metters, and John Trail. He also delved into orchestration and score study with Nuno Peixoto de Pinho and Roberto Fiore.

In addition to his new role with the MSO, Maia serves as the Director of Orchestras at Boulter Middle School and Tyler High School in Tyler, TX. He remains actively involved in the broader orchestral community, collaborating with Maestro Felix Torres at the East Texas Youth Orchestra as a cover conductor.

Maestro Felix Torres, MSO's Music & Artistic Director, expressed enthusiasm about Maia's advancement:

“Francisco’s dedication and musical insight have greatly enriched our performances. His promotion to Assistant Conductor is a testament to his talent and commitment to our orchestra's mission.”

The MSO looks forward to Maia's continued contributions in his expanded role, anticipating a dynamic and inspiring 2025–2026 season.
